The present Sioux Lookout Public Library is an approximate 630 square-metre brick building located at 21 Fifth Avenue.
We have come a long way!
Mrs. George Farlinger established the library in 1936 and was able to start the library thanks, in part, to a book collection donated by Mrs. Sarah Vaughn. These books accompanied Mrs. Vaughn, in a scow, when she came to Sioux Lookout from Dinorwic, Ontario sometime between 1912 and 1914!
In 1958 the Sioux Lookout Town Council passed a bylaw to officially establish a library; the start of a working relationship between the Municipality of Sioux Lookout and the Sioux Lookout Public Library Board that has continued and strengthened since then.

From the beginning the library has been "housed" in many places. A small building behind the St. Mary's Church, the old Nurses' Home on Front Street, the lounge in the Y, the basement of the Post Office, an unused service station, until, finally, the present library which was opened, officially, on October 16, 1989.
